Governing Lakes as Commons: the knowledge challenge
Lakes, like the pasture in the Tragedy of the Commons, can be overused and their value destroyed. Lake associations are initiated to address an overuse or other type of problem, but their long-term viability resides on the knowledge bases they develop or can access. The talk/discussion will discuss the knowledge we have, what is developing and what might be needed to better govern the lake commons
June 27, 2024 - Northern Waters Land Trust will update us on lake conservation and other programs.
July 25, 2024 - Our speaker, Bruce Carlson, MD, PHD will present "An Underwater Tour through a North Country Lake! The talk will first outline how a typical area lake is put together and how it functions. This introduction will be followed by a series of numerous underwater videos that paint a vivid picture of the fascinating activities of many of the aquatic inhabitants of the lake. The talk will end with a treatment of two important aquatic invasive species - zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil - with special emphasis on how they affect the ecology of a lake. Bruce's talk will be followed by a question and answer period.
