07-25-2024: Dr. Bruce M. Carlson's program outlines how a typical area lake is put together and how it functions.
It also includes numerous underwater videos that paint a vivid picture of the fascinating activities of
many aquatic lake inhabitants. In Part B, he also covers two important aquatic invasive species – zebra
mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil – with special emphasis on how they affect lake ecology.
Speaker Carlson, MD, PHD, is a long-time summer resident at Ten Mile Lake north of Hackensack,
and was a professor at the University of Michigan Medical School for 40 years. He is the author of
about 20 books in that field and has edited another 15 books. He carried out research for extended
periods in the USSR, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Finland and New Zealand.
Early in his career he was a fisheries biologist, with an MS degree in ichthyology (the study of fish).
He has written two books on lakes, “Beneath the Surface – A Natural History of a Fisherman’s Lake;”
and “A North Country Lake Throughout the Seasons.” He also has a new book, “Understanding
Midwestern Aquatic Invasives,” just released in 2024.
An avid angler, Carlson has for many years also written articles for In-Fisherman magazine,
